Almost 75 years ago, Joseph Buford Cox witnessed
the sawing motion of a timber beetle larvae burrowing
through a piece of wood. Curious, Joe took the larvae
back to his Portland, Oregon, basement for a closer
inspection. By observing C-shaped jaws under a
magnifying glass, he designed, manufactured and
patented the “chipper saw chain” and started the
Oregon Saw Chain Company in 1947. Today, all the saw
chain produced in the world utilizes the design Joe Cox
developed in the 40s. Our founder’s ingenuity in finding
inspiration from nature to design a more efficient tool is
a big part of who we are, but we are still going to push
our talent, creativity and imagination to continually
reimagine and redefine what is possible.
